This is a triangular crochet shawl that looks as if small square flags are linked together.
Each flag is worked in a dense fabric, yet the spaces between the flags create an overall light and airy feel.
The shawl is worked from the bottom point of the triangle and gradually increases in size.
Because the same process of connecting the flags is repeated as you work, you can continue crocheting until it reaches your preferred size.
This design uses techniques from Tunisian crochet.
One subtle point is that it can be worked using a regular crochet hook.
I crocheted the entire piece with a standard hook, but you may of course use a Tunisian hook if you prefer.
Unless you are using super bulky yarn, a regular crochet hook will likely feel more familiar and comfortable to work with, so I encourage you to give it a try.
From my own experience, when working the final edging, if a grip-style hook feels awkward, you may find it helpful to switch to a non-grip hook or to use a Tunisian hook instead.

This piece was made using “CFC Pepper Yarn (Fingering)” from Camellia Fiber Company.
It is a fingering-weight, 100% wool variegated yarn.
Because the process of working the flags is quite repetitive, the changing colors of the yarn provided strong motivation and kept the work engaging.
Before making this piece, I also swatched with a solid-colored yarn, and solids have their own appeal as well.
Each individual flag stands out more clearly, making the overall fabric easier to read and giving it a clean, well-defined look.
You may find it helpful to choose either a variegated yarn to add visual interest, or a solid yarn to highlight the structure of the fabric, depending on what you value most.
Since the repeated process also includes inserting the hook into chain stitches, I recommend choosing a yarn that resists splitting and feels easy to work with.

This pattern is primarily explained through video tutorials, with the crochet chart provided as supplementary material.
There are no written explanations for Tunisian crochet techniques or for reading the chart, so please refer to the video tutorials to learn how Tunisian crochet is used in this project.
In the [Ease] section below, “Mostly basic technique” is rated 1 out of 5 (as this is not standard crochet), but within Tunisian crochet, the techniques used can be considered basic.
Once you understand the method, you will rarely need to refer to the chart until working the final edging, making this project well suited for mobile crocheting or for working alongside other projects.
It is a piece to be worked patiently, but as you progress, an intriguing fabric emerges—combining the dense texture of the flags with the airy spaces between them in a beautifully balanced way.
I hope you enjoy working toward the day when you can wear the finished piece.
