A Stockinette-Like Look in Crochet

Have you ever wished there were a crochet stitch that looked like stockinette stitch?
This fabric is lightweight, soft, and uses less yarn than you might expect.

When creating crochet garments, a stitch that creates a lightweight fabric without being too open or sheer is a particularly appealing option to have in your repertoire.

For this top, I chose a crochet stitch that has a subtle resemblance to stockinette stitch, both in its appearance and overall feel.

The neckline features a boat neck, followed by a round yoke.
Worked top down, you can check the fit and adjust your size choice as you go.

With a relaxed fit, the finished bust circumference of the smallest size is 109 cm.
Despite the generous ease, the garment uses only 8 balls of yarn, resulting in a lightweight crochet garment.

About the Yarn

The yarn used for this pattern is ISAGER “MERILIN”. I love this yarn weight because it is so versatile, and I keep coming back to it.

This yarn is a blend of 80% wool and 20% linen, with a beautiful subtle mélange effect that adds depth and character to the fabric.

It is the same yarn used for the “Herringbone Sweater” and “Crossed Waffle Shawl” patterns available in my shop, so please refer to those projects if you would like to see the yarn’s texture and overall feel.

Pattern Highlights

Once you finish the textured yoke section, the rest of the pattern is simple and relaxing to work on.

Although this is a garment project, the overall construction is relatively straightforward, so I have rated this pattern as intermediate level.

The yoke section includes some additional guidance to help you through the textured stitches.
There are only a few rounds to work, so please refer to the chart carefully when working the increase sections.

After that, you can enjoy a relaxing stretch of simple crochet stitches.
Since crochet stitches are secured one by one as you work, there is less worry about dropped stitches compared to knitting, making this part feel a little more relaxing.

Enjoy your crochet time with a video or music in the background, or simply immerse yourself in the calming rhythm of making stitch after stitch.

For the yoke, make good use of stitch markers as you work.

I recommend preparing 16 stitch markers.
Having 12 markers will make stitch counting easier, and the remaining 4 can be replaced with small pieces of scrap yarn or other markers if needed.

Fit and Wearing Style

The recommended ease for choosing your size is approximately 6–8" (15–20 cm) larger than your actual bust measurement.
The sample shown in the photos has 12" (30 cm) of ease, so it may be helpful as a reference if you prefer a more relaxed fit.

With its beautiful drape and flattering silhouette that avoids a bulky look, choosing a slightly larger size is also an option.

Add this versatile piece to your wardrobe as a reliable layer for the changing seasons.
