Japanese Crochet Pattern: Geometric Motif Throw (Chart Included)

This is a blanket made by joining 48 crochet motifs.

The motifs are large, so there aren't many of them, and even though I don't usually do much motif joining, I was able to finish it smoothly.

Because the motifs are worked in single crochet, the fabric is sturdy and the blanket is very warm.

I was imagining using it on an autumn camping trip while I crocheted, but it turned out to look just as nice at home.

What makes it stand out are the triangle motifs, which you don't often see, and the crisp geometric pattern.
There's something a little architectural about it, which I like to think gives it a Scandinavian touch (if I do say so myself!).

Each motif is very easy to crochet.
Only basic crochet stitches are used, so beginners can make them too.

Joining the motifs may use a technique you're less familiar with, so I've prepared a video tutorial for that part.

The joining is hard to fully explain with a chart alone, so even experienced crocheters may find the video helpful.

Did you notice that a few two-color motifs are mixed into this blanket?
It's fun to decide how many to include and where to place them, just the way you like!

The pattern includes a "Color Planning Sheet" page where you can color in your design and mark where the two-color motifs go.
Print it out and put it to good use.

For the yarn, I used Lettlopi, a 100% wool yarn from Iceland.
I used a total of 16 balls: 6 each of rust and gold, and 4 of gray. For the border, I used leftover yarn (a dark brown wool of about the same weight).
With this amount of yarn, the finished size is 75 cm tall and 150 cm wide.

In my case, 3 motifs per ball worked out just right.
If you have a scale, try weighing your first motif before cutting the yarn. This will give you an idea of how many rounds you can work to use each ball without waste.

That's because you can change the number of rounds, as long as each motif ends on an even-numbered round.
Once you've decided on the number of rounds, make all your motifs with that same number.
